Octopus Kingdom sits on a striking urban landscape on the roof of The Gateway Phase II, a new mall in Nanshan District, Shenzhen, China.
Octopus Kingdom is a super fun urban toy for Nanshan residents as well as all visitors to the mall.
A colorful playground landscape acts as an attraction for the city, standing out from its urban surroundings and thus attracting attention.
This amusement scene is like a small town by the sea. A big deep-sea octopus emerges from the surface of the sea, curiously approaching this paradise-like coast, and is deeply attracted by these colorful sand castles.
The 7-meter-high octopus head is the main amusement equipment. Visitors can climb or slide down and other activities, while its 8 winding tentacles are on the ground. It helps children exercise their bodies and improve their learning and cognitive abilities through play.
Nine colorful sand castles on the beach create a "play route" where children can travel from one castle to another, discovering different play content in each castle.
The ground is made of colored EPDM, which can reduce the impact when playing. The gradient changes to yellow, just like the sand on the beach; the gradient changes to blue, just like the different colors of sea water.
In addition to the main octopus and sand castle, the playground is also equipped with several seating installations, such as an amphitheater for parties, or a set of tables and chairs under an ocean umbrella for adults to rest while the children are having fun.
To achieve an impressive night-time effect, decorative lighting accentuates the outlines of the most central parts of the project – namely the octopus head, sandcastle rim and amphitheater. Glittering dots of light are embedded in the ground to create an illusion, while custom algal lights are installed around the perimeter to create an overall immersive ocean experience.
